The Best of Me

There are plenty of books that  describe the deep romance between two people. Twilight, Divergent, The Hunger Games…you name it. What makes The Best of Me so interesting is the result of their love. The story between Dawson and Amanda  is more than just simple love, their love represents freedom, and no other book can tell a romantic event as incredible as this.

Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier reunite with each other when they are called for Tuck’s funeral, an old friend of theirs, who was there for them 20 years ago, when Dawson was threatened by his own family-the criminal family known as the Coles. Apart from his family, Dawson is somehow different-different enough for Amanda to soften his heart even more. The love between two young teenagers grow deeper every day, but that wasn’t what drew me into the story, or the reason I can call this book my favorite so far as a 15-year old teenager.

Any other author than Sparks would’ve written a story that was pretty obvious, maybe because you can’t really dig deep into subjects like love. Two people meet, they flirt or are drawn to each other for some obvious reason, they fall in love, face a problem (it’s usually when one learns the other’s secret or something), then back to love. It is really difficult to get off from this cycle. But that is how ordinary, relateable love works. Even though other authors add fantasy, unusual environments, or other strange factors, the result is always, always predictable. Teenage love stories have never brought me to tears. Let’s just say I’m not an emotional person. Not when it comes to movies or books, anyway.

My point is, Sparks has a unique style of writing. He draws readers in with something other than sci-fi backgrounds–realistic romance. And let me assure you that without a factor like the current popular sci-fi environment, interesting love stories are a lot more difficult to write. But somehow, Sparks manages to pull them off, not once, but multiple times, too. I’m always amazed by his work, but so far, The Best of Me is my favorite. Why? In the book, Dawson makes a huge sacrifice for Amanda, which I dare not to say.

Want to find out what the sacrifice is?
